LG Unveils World's Second Curved Smartphone
Both companies have major display divisions. Both LG and Samsung unveiled smartphone-sized curved displays almost at the same time.
The LG G Flex has a six-inch 720p display, 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 13 megapixel rear-facing camera, 2.1 megapixel front facing camera and a 3,500mAh battery.
Size wise, it weighs 177 grams, is 7.9mm–8.7mm thick. It also has volume buttons on the back of the phone like LG’s flagship smartphone, the G2.
However, unlike the G2, it has a coating on the back that fixes hairline scratches. The phone also comes with a unique ‘swing lockscreen’ feature that uses a parallex effect to unlock the phone.
“The flexible display market is expected to grow quickly as this technology is expected to expand further into diverse applications including automotive displays, tablets and wearable devices,” said Dr Sang Deog Yeo, executive vice-president and chief technology officer of LG Display, earlier this month.
“Our goal is to take an early lead in the flexible display market by introducing new products with enhanced performance and differentiated designs next year.”
The phone will go on sale in South Korea in November. There is no word on a worldwide roll out, but we will update you when it is announced.
